The first time Aang discovered that Katara and Zuko were having a secret relationship together, he had been two emotions. Disappointed and confused. He had been disappointed because his initial plan of asking Katara out had just gone out the window, and confused about…
Well, the whole situation.
He didn’t understand it, and clearly Sokka hadn’t either but he had been too caught up in the fact that Katara had kept it a secret relationship from him and hadn’t been wondering the same questions Aang had…Why? How?
The question of why had been due to the fact that the two seemed nothing-scratch that, the two weren’t anything a like. Katara was sweet, caring, motherly, stubborn when she wanted to be, and…just Katara. Zuko was quiet, snarky, bitter, true he could also be stubborn but it hardly showed unless he thought you were worth his anger. Their elements were total opposites!
It wasn’t the secret that frustrated Aang but the fact that he couldn’t understand or answer these questions. He took a breath, he supposed he was being a bit overdramatic with the “They had nothing in common,” part, he had contrasted,
Now it was time to compare.
Ok, they both lost their mothers to the same nation; they both lost their mothers, which was also important. They were both stubborn, but could that even count? Wouldn’t they cancel each other out, therefore not making the relationship possible?
Once again the young avatar was at a loss.
The thing that actually surprised him the most was probably that when he had found out…he hadn’t been angry, he hadn’t felt the avatar state coming on, his heart had been a bit heavy but the feeling stayed with him for only a moment. And that’s when he started to think…
~~ Aang grunted as Sokka stomped away hitting his shoulder, “Sorry,” he muttered darkly. Aang fell into a fast paced step with him. “What’s wrong?” he pointed to the distance where Katara and Zuko were sitting on the fountain. Katara had her knees propped up, her chin resting on the top of them. Zuko sitting there, his lips parted which told Aang he was saying something to her.
“Now I know why my father wanted me to watch her, because if I don’t…this happens!”
“What happened?”
“Katara is keeping secrets from me! Her brother!” at the corner of his eye he could see the two watching them; he took Sokka to the side.
“What secret?” He said slightly regretting the snoopiness hinting in his voice.
“She’s sleeping with Zuko!” At that moment, Aang would admit that his heart sank and his eyes began to burn, but something was off, this didn’t sound like either of them. “Katara…is sleeping with Zuko?” he had asked in disbelief. “Well…not sleeping with but they’re in a relationship and it bugs me that she didn’t tell me!”
“Everything bugs you.” They both turned to see Toph snickering on the side.
“Shut up Toph.”

Aang sat back on his bed and thought it long and hard. He wasn’t mad at Zuko because he hadn’t known about his plan, and he wasn’t mad at Katara because she decided who she was with…so why did he feel so…conflicted? He looked out the window, Zuko and Katara were sitting at the edge of the temple, she laughed, and at that moment, without even noticing…
He smiled.
Maybe it all worked out for the better, maybe it was just that usual disappointment that he was naturally supposed to have. As for why they had an attraction to each other, maybe it was because opposites really do attract. And maybe, just maybe…
This was how it was supposed to be.
